Common Reactions to Making A Microaggression
SELF-ANGER
It’s easy to feel frustrated with ourselves when we make a mistake & say something we regret. Self-compassion may be the last thing on your mind, but remember, we are all doing the best we can.
GUILT & SHAME
Shame & remorse are normal emotions to feel when we act against our values. You may have a strong urge to hide or explain yourself. Remember: you wouldn’t have these emotions if you didn’t have good intentions.
DEFENSIVENESS
Sometimes shame & guilt turn quickly to anger or defensiveness. This is self-protective. Remember that you are a good person who made a mistake.
HIGH STRESS
This can look like physical pain or illness, depression, anxiety & more.
SELF-DOUBT
You may be oscillating between thoughts like “that wasn’t so bad to say, right?” and “how could I say such a horrible thing?!”
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO
Do you want to forget about this & pretend it never happened? Or apologize immediately? You may be thinking, “But what do I say?! Where do I begin"?” This is normal.
