How to Repair When You Messed Up
A step-by-step script:
-
Be as specific as possible. Don’t assume the other person knows what you’re talking about.
“An hour ago in the staff meeting I called you by another Asian-American employee’s name and then laughed it off.”
-
Remember to use “I” language. Don’t get caught up in explaining yourself - just briefly share your intentions.
“I laughed because I felt very anxious and shameful when I realized that I could have offended you and others.”
-
Keep it simple, direct & clear.
“I’m really sorry for my behavior.”
-
Describe your plans for being more mindful.
If you aren’t sure, you could talk it through with a trusted co-worker first. We’re all learning!
“Next time, if I ever make that mistake again, I’d like to muster the courage on the spot to call myself out for making a microaggression.”
